APPENDIX: Store Bulky Data Noncompiled at Script End

Arrays or strings can be stored in an appendix to the script to restore or alternate data at run time. Work off placeholders with the EDIT function.

• Data are usually defined and initialized at compile time in REAL, CHARACTER, or DATA statements
• Larger arrays or strings are advantageously stored in an appendix section of a script file . This allows to
  1. restore the data at run time
  2. modify the data with the help of place holders, INDEX or EDIT functions.
• A
  script_appendix
  section starts at the end of the script with a "#" in column 1. This terminates the program section.
• Appendix chapters are not compiled and therefore not executable. They simply store information retrieved by APPENDIX function:

  appendix_chapters
  start with an identifier in column 1 and extend up to the next non-blank in column 1 This can be the identifier to the next chapter. Chapter names are case-sensitive.

  • All lines up to the next non-blank in column1
  • belong to this appendix item.
  • A=3.1 B=1/9, TXT=hello world, VEC=4.1 -5 6.2
  • end of chapter 1 (= start of the chapter called "end")
• read_appendix
  chapters by
  • text = APPENDIX( chaptername [, line1, [line2]] )
  • stores the contents of chaptername in text. CarriageReturns and LineFeeds are included.
  • default line1 is 0, the header line
  • default line2 is the last chapter line
  • three_lines = APPENDIX('many_lines', i, i+2) ! lines i, i+1, i+2
  • WRITE(WINdow=handle_nr) APPENDIX("Table23A") ! write to child window
• evaluate_appendix
  by the INIT function, e.g.
  • INIT( APPENDIX("chapter1"), txt, VEC, a, b, c)
  sets txt, vec, a, and b to what is found in chapter1. C is set to 0 (not found)
• dialogs_and_appendix
  offer numerous possibilities, e.g.
  • DLG( Button ="Chapter1:&ButtonText", Width=8, Height=5) ! a button with extra long text
  • DLG( ListBox = "Chapter2", Width=0) ! fill a listbox
  • DLG( 'Chapter4') ! ⇾ a template for dialogs too long to fit a single line
